About the Role

As Chief Engineer on our humanitarian relief vessel, you will be responsible for leading all engineering operations and ensuring the reliable performance of mechanical, electrical, and auxiliary systems. This critical role is essential for maintaining our vessel's operational readiness during emergency response missions.

You'll lead a team of engineering officers and crew, overseeing maintenance schedules, repair operations, and system upgrades. Your technical expertise and leadership skills will ensure that our vessel can respond quickly and effectively to humanitarian crises along the African coastline, often in challenging and remote locations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all engineering operations and maintenance
  • Oversee main propulsion systems and auxiliary machinery
  • Manage fuel consumption and efficiency optimization
  • Coordinate with shore-based technical support
  • Ensure compliance with maritime safety regulations
  • Lead emergency response procedures for engineering systems
  • Manage spare parts inventory and procurement
  • Supervise engineering crew training and development
  • Maintain engineering logs and documentation
  • Coordinate with port engineers during maintenance periods
  • Ensure environmental compliance and waste management
  • Support humanitarian aid delivery operations

Requirements

Essential Qualifications

  • Valid STCW III/2 Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency
  • Minimum 5 years' experience as 2nd Engineer or equivalent
  • Experience with modern marine diesel engines and systems
  • Valid medical certificate (ENG1 or equivalent)
  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken)
  • Experience with computerized maintenance management systems

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in humanitarian or emergency response operations
  • Knowledge of African coastal operations and port facilities
  • Experience with hybrid or alternative fuel systems
  • Additional safety and environmental certifications
  • Experience with remote monitoring and diagnostic systems
  • Multilingual skills (French, Portuguese, or Arabic)
